So who are we?
Tastes and Tides is a digital magazine that explores the crossroads of good surf and good food. Come here to meet the surfer behind a local winery, a chef whose business depends on the moods of the sea, or the challenges faced by coastal communities around the world.
We are a small operation of two people with a mission to tell the stories that unite the worlds of surf and coastal living to that of all things delicious. Fusing together their love for the ocean and their fondness for a good glass of wine with hearty meal, our co-founders hatched the idea for a magazine that covers both.
With that, we are proud to bring you Tastes and Tides.
The Team
Tastes and Tides is brought to you by co-founders Matthew Dursum and Samantha Demangate
Samantha Demangate
Co-founder
Editorial Director
Proud to be from the California coast, Samantha has a deep love for both wine country and the sea. With an adventurous palate as a kid, and an exposure to unique flavors, Samantha always knew she wanted to leave home and learn more. But even after leaving her region, her love for the North Pacific Coast has never wavered.
Samantha has been living throughout Latin America for the past 2 + years for the purpose of understanding traditional cuisines, studying wine and improving her Spanish.
She has photographed for a collection of magazines and collaborated on a series of projects around cultural practices and traditional foods on a global scale.
Matt Dursum
Co-founder
Editor-in-chief
Hailing from the frozen lakes of Northern Michigan, Matt Dursum has had his fair share of ice beards and frostbitten fingers. Since he was a teenager, Matt has been surfing relentlessly and obsessively, fitting every surfer stereotype, one ‘pitted’ comment at a time.
From Japan to Indonesia, Morocco to Chile, Matt’s love of good waves has taken him far from home. Throughout his travels and time at home, one thing has inspired him as much as surf—food.
Matt has written for a variety of magazines and taken on projects that have both challenged and inspired him.
