Since taking office in 2023, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has tried to implement a VISA for citizens of the USA, Canada, and Australia. The move was to reciprocate the VISA requirements of Brazilian nationals in those countries.
Former president, Jair Bolsonaro, exempted those countries from needing a VISA to travel to Brazil. This ended a long-standing requirement that made traveling to Brazil difficult for some people. The move was intended to promote tourism.
Third Times the Charm for the Brazil Visa
Shortly after taking office in 2023, President Lula announced he was reinstating Brazil’s VISA policies for reciprocity. This would affect citizens of the US, Canada, and Australia.
Following his announcement, Lula and his government postponed the VISA to January 2024 and again to April 10, 2024.
With no word of further changes, travelers rushed to get a Brazilian eVISA. Many people experience technical difficulties on the state assigned VISA agency website.
After many people were refused to travel and denied VISAs, Lula once again postponed the VISA requirement to April 10, 2025. This time, with less than a day left until the VISA requirement was scheduled to go into effect.
Travel to Brazil
After Argentina, travelers from the United States make up the vast majority of Brazil’s foreign tourists. In 2023, roughly 670,000 US citizens visited the country.
Brazil produces some of the world’s greatest surfing talent and surf tourism is increasing. Along the country’s 7,300 kilometer (4,500 mile) coast are thousands of world-class beach breaks, reefs, and points.
With the tourist VISA once again extended, this time until April 10, 2025, more foreign tourists are expected to travel to its sunny shores. For the millions of people who depend on tourism revenue, this is a very good thing.
