According to a new report, record high levels of CO2 have been recorded in Earth’s atmosphere. This is largely because of burning fossil fuels from global industries.
Since 1958 when records began, CO2 levels have been on the increase. This May, concentrations reached 427 parts per million. This is up three ppm from last year.
This year, extreme heat waves have wreaked havoc on vulnerable communities around the world. In the United States, temperatures close to 30° F above normal in many parts of the west.
Causes of Extreme Weather
Scientists have linked excessive heat and destructive weather with higher levels of CO2 in our atmosphere. Most pollutants come from burning fossil fuels.
Today, CO2 levels are higher than any recorded period in the last million years. Scientists record these levels at a research facility in Hawaii. Measurements began in 1958 when CO2 concentration in the atmosphere was at 313 ppm.
This all points to concerning trends and the inability of world governments to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Many world leaders have promised to encourage a shift over to renewable energy, yet this remains to be seen.
Consequences of a Warming Planet
Scientists at the National Hurricane Center are predicting the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season to be severe. Over 20 severe storms are expected in the Atlantic and many of these storms will develop into hurricanes, making it the center’s most dire forecast on record.
Warmer ocean temperatures are the reason. These extra balmy conditions are the result of trapped greenhouse gasses.
For coastal communities, an increase in storm activity mixed with higher ocean levels is a recipe for disaster. Already, communities such as New Orleans and Puerto Rico have lost billions of dollars in damage and dozens of lives.
