This week, Florida endured over 20 inches of rain and widespread flooding. This follows Southern Brazil’s devastating floods in May that cost the region over $2.2 billion in damages and at least 100 people dead.
Airport authorities canceled flights due to floodwaters at Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Throughout Southern Florida, flood waters up to waist deep cut off roads and stranded motorists.
The Cause of the Floods in Florida
On Tuesday, a storm system blew in off the Gulf of Mexico. Over 20 inches fell, creating catastrophic flooding in some low-lying areas.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency on Wednesday. Meteorologists expect more rain to come on Thursday, which could create more localized flooding in an area with over 4.5 million people.
South Florida is one of the most flood-prone regions in the United States. Storm surges from tropical systems and major rain events put millions at risk.
The May Floods in Southern Brazil
In May, heavy rains impacted the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Southern Brazil, causing mass flooding. Estimates of over $2.2 billion dollars in damages and over 140 people dead flooded the news. The floods also resulted in about 600,000 people forced from their homes.
Throughout the region, businesses, houses, farms, and infrastructure were severely damaged. Over 400 cities were flooded and the state’s agriculture industry took over $600 million in losses.
Professional surfers such as Lucas Chianca and Italo Ferreira drove to the region to help raise awareness for the flood victims. The team used jet skis to help stranded people and animals and provide aid.
Several foundations set up charities to help distribute funding and aid. One of which is the Brazil Foundation.
